Video (below) and photography (click to view) can be a really important tools for discovering insights and creating great looking content at the same time. I’ve shot and edited hundreds of video interviews. I often shoot them alone, with one assistant, or one other interviewer. It’s harder that way, but people tend to open up more when there isn’t a big crew around. I also edit and do motion graphics. Wrap that research in some tasty graphics and it makes for great content that can often pay for the cost of the research.
Ethnographer Tricia Wang calls video “Thick Data”. I’ve shot a number of “customer journeys”. It can be really informative, and entertaining, to learn how people arrive at their decision to buy a certain brand or product. Online focus group platforms like itracks.com allow us to conduct Skype-like interviews with people anywhere in the country. (Or I can actually use Skype, record it, edit it and transcribe it using the IBM Watson app I built.) I’ve also done really informative projects where I interviewed the top decision-makers (or product teams) in a company and edited their story together. I find that no single person knows the whole story, but collectively they do.
